Cape Girardeau Central Jr. High School Addition

NARRATIVE
The addition and renovations at Cape Girardeau Central Jr. High provided a bright, modern entry and classroom expansion. The addition to the south of the building now served as the main entry, and the reoriented lobby and administrative suite adjacent to the new entrance allowed for enhanced safety with a new secure vestibule and improved visibility. A new practice gymnasium relieved usage from the primary gymnasium, and new high-school level Science labs on the lower level enhance the way students learn and interact.
While the original red brick design of the exterior was maintained in the surgical addition, the new interior space was designed to be transformative. A simple, neutral palette compliments the linear forms of the architectural elements. Singular, bold moments of the school color infuse the space with pride.
A custom feature wall was planned for the north wall in the Lobby. Adjacent to the main gym, the design uses salvaged wood gym flooring, which was demolished as part of the renovation. The old gym flooring is applied in vertical application and provides a backdrop for the feature wall. Tapering the wood planks adds interest to the composition and calls attention to the wood's original purpose. The school's mascot is digitally printed on cut vinyl, and dimensional metal letters proudly display the school name.
