OTHS Smiley Campus - Band & Choral Renovation

NARRATIVE
Due to a growing student interest, the O'Fallon Township High School District needed to expand their award-winning band and choral program spaces. They strategically took advantage of some existing underutilized spaces to provide larger classrooms, practice rooms and storage areas for the program. The district's existing auditorium with tiered theater seating was infilled and converted to a choral classroom, practice rooms and a large multipurpose space. Moving choral, allowed their existing band area to be reconfigured using the additional square footage. The entire area was renovated to create a larger band room proper, band office, practice rooms, ensemble room, and instrument storage and uniform storage spaces.
The interior design of the space was selected using the school's bold blue and yellow school colors. Light colored flooring and paint provide a simple, neutral background in spaces often crowed with instruments and equipment. School pride beams from the blue and yellow sound diffusing and absorbing panels that line the walls. A dark navy acoustical curtain provides the teachers the ability to tune their space based on ensemble types and everything genre from jazz to orchestra. The ceilings include rectangular acoustical ceiling clouds, and diffusing panels suspended below the dark navy ceiling. The overall design of the space speaks to the demanding acoustical needs of band and choral spaces, while providing school pride and a modern aesthetic.
